How to do it

  1. Choose a photo

Tap the box above and pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo.

  2. Pick a style

Choose an even border, a Polaroid card with room for a caption, or padding that makes the photo 1:1 or 4:5 without cropping it.

  3. Set the width and color, then download

Slide the width, pick a color, and save the result as JPG or PNG.

The short answer

This is a free online tool for anyone who wants to add a border, a Polaroid card or padding to a photo before posting it, and it needs no sign-up. Choose your photo on this page and pick a style: an even border, a Polaroid card, or padding to a 1:1 or 4:5 frame. Set the width and color, check the preview, then download the new JPG or PNG. It keeps Display P3 color when your photo has it and your browser can draw it.

Make a photo square without cropping

Choose Pad to 1:1 square, or Pad to 4:5 portrait for a tall frame. The whole photo stays, and the extra space is filled with the color you pick. The border width sets the minimum margin around the photo.

Borders for posts and prints

An even border adds the same margin on every side. A Polaroid card adds narrow margins on three sides and a wide band at the bottom, with room for a caption. Pad to 1:1 and Pad to 4:5 put your photo on a square or portrait canvas without cropping it, which helps when an app only accepts those shapes.

Width and color

Border width is a percentage of the photo’s shorter side, so the same setting looks right on a small and a large photo. White is the classic choice. A cream or black card suits a Polaroid look.

Made in your browser

The photo is read and drawn inside this page. The finished image has no camera or location info, because it is drawn as a new picture.

Add a frame on your iPhone with PicWay

The PicWay photo editor has a Frame option. The choices include Thin and Wide borders (about 2% and 6% of the shorter side), Instant, which is narrow on three sides and wide at the bottom with room for one line of text, and an Info bar along the bottom. See Add a border, date, or camera info to a photo for the details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I post a wide photo as a square without cropping?

Yes. Choose “Pad to 1:1 square” or “Pad to 4:5 portrait”. The photo stays whole and the extra space is filled with the color you pick. The border width sets the minimum margin around it.

How does the Polaroid card work?

The photo gets an even margin on three sides and a wider band at the bottom, like an instant print. You can type a short caption at the bottom. Pick a dark color and the caption turns light.

Will the colors change?

When it has a Display P3 profile and your browser can draw in Display P3, the new file keeps that profile. Otherwise it is saved in sRGB, and a JPG is saved at 95% quality, so very small color shifts are possible.

Does the new photo keep the date and location?

No. The new picture is drawn fresh and has no camera or location info.

What size is the result?

With Even border, the result is your photo plus the border on every side. A Polaroid card has a deeper border at the bottom. With Pad to 1:1 square or Pad to 4:5 portrait, the canvas is padded out to that shape, with at least the chosen border on every side and the photo in the middle.

Which photo formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC. You can save the result as JPG or PNG.

How wide can the border be?

From 0% to 20% of the photo, starting at 5%. The slider sets the border width, so a setting that suits a small photo also suits a large one.

Can I use a color other than white?

Yes. Any color you pick with the color control works, and white is the default. A dark color suits a Polaroid card.

Is there a limit on the Polaroid caption?

Yes. The caption is limited to 80 characters, so keep it to one short line.

Is the downloaded JPG recompressed a lot?

No. The JPG is saved at 95% quality. Choose PNG if you want no lossy compression at all.

Do I need to sign up for an account?

No. There is no sign-up. Open this page, choose your file and download the result.
