How to do it
-
Check what is using space
Open Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage. Look at how much Photos uses compared with apps.
-
Turn on Optimize Storage if you use iCloud Photos
Open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then choose Optimize iPhone Storage. Your iPhone keeps smaller versions and the originals stay in iCloud.
-
Check the result
Return to Settings, General, iPhone Storage after a while. If Photos is still large, move the photos you rarely open to a computer, or make them smaller before deleting originals.
Which storage option should I choose?
It depends on what you want. Safe, reliable and easy are three different goals, and each option below is stronger at one of them.
| Option | Where originals live | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage | In iCloud | Easiest day to day | Needs an iCloud plan big enough, and a connection to see full quality |
| Backup to a computer | On your computer or drive | Keeping photos you rarely open | Manual, and you must keep that drive safe |
| Smaller files on the iPhone | On your iPhone | Keeping everything in Photos | Saves less than moving photos off |
How does Optimize Storage work?
When you turn on Optimize Storage, your device keeps space-saving versions of your photos and videos, while iCloud Photos stores them in their original, high-resolution version (Apple Support). That also means iCloud Photos mirrors your library. Deleting a photo on one device removes it from the others, so don’t treat iCloud Photos as a place to park photos you want off your phone.
How does PicWay help?
If you want to keep photos on your iPhone, PicWay can make them smaller. The compressed version appears in Set aside first, and space is freed only when you delete the original. You decide when, after you’ve checked the new version.
Which one is safest?
No single place is safest. Keep photos you can’t replace in at least two places, for example iCloud and a drive at home. Delete from the iPhone only after you’ve opened a few of them in the other place.
Do I need to pay for more storage?
Only if you choose iCloud Photos and your library no longer fits in your plan. A computer backup or smaller files don’t need an iCloud plan.
