Google Photos is built around backup: turn it on and your photos are saved to your Google Account, where any device you’re signed in to can see them. PicWay reviews, organizes, compresses, and deletes on your device, with no account. Use Google Photos for cloud backup, and add PicWay to go through and tidy your library on the phone itself.

| Feature | PicWay | Google Photos |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where your photos go | Reviewing, organizing, compressing, and deleting happen on your device, and there’s no account. The Private Vault syncs to your own iCloud while its iCloud sync is on, which it is by default: it’s encrypted first. | Turn on backup and your photos and videos are saved to your Google Account, so you can see them from any device you’re signed in to. Google Account storage is shared with Google Drive and Gmail. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6193313?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Similar photos | PicWay finds similar photos and bursts, and you decide which to keep. Nothing is deleted until you review and iOS asks you to confirm. | Similar photos can be grouped into stacks. Google says stacks only work for backed-up photos and don’t change your available storage. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/14169846?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Cleanup suggestions | Duplicate items are grouped so each group keeps one. Switch the Photos tab from All to Life to keep screenshots, screen recordings, and animated images out of view, plus non-camera images whose text looks like a receipt, ID, or document. Nothing is deleted. | For backed-up photos and videos, a storage management tool surfaces items you might want to delete, like blurry photos, screenshots, and large videos. When you’re out of storage, it can suggest similar photos to delete and keep the best shot. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128843?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Deleting and recovering | Photos you don’t want are set aside first and stay in your library, and you can put them back anytime. To really delete, you review them, then iOS asks you to confirm. Deleted photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days. | Deleting photos and videos in the Google Photos app also deletes them from your device. Deleted items stay in the trash for 30 days before they’re permanently deleted. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128858?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Saving space | Compress videos at Standard or Strong. You delete the original only after you confirm the new version. Compressed Live Photos stay Live, with a smaller photo and motion. | Google Photos can remove photos and videos from your iPhone once they’re safely backed up. They stay in your Google Photos library. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/6128843?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Private photos | The Private Vault encrypts photos on your iPhone before saving them. If you forget how to open it, 12 words you wrote down get you back in. It won’t open while your screen is being recorded, and it locks on its own after a while. | Locked Folder opens with your Face ID, Touch ID, or device passcode, and you can’t use a different Locked Folder password. Items you don’t back up are stored only on that device. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/10694388?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS)) |
| Collages | Combine several Live Photos into one collage that moves: All at once, One by one, or Spotlight. | Make and edit collages with photos in your library, in the Google Photos app or on the web. ([support.google.com](https://support.google.com/photos/answer/12637115?hl=en)) |

Which to use: If you want your photos backed up to a Google Account and available on every device you sign in to, use Google Photos. If you want to go through photos with a swipe, keep screenshots out of view, compress videos, and lock private photos on your iPhone without an account, add PicWay. The two can work on the same iPhone.

## When Google Photos is enough {#when-google-photos-is-enough}

If what you want most is a backup in your Google Account, with your photos on every device you sign in to, Google Photos is built for that.

## When to add PicWay {#when-to-add-app}

- You want to go through photos one at a time with a swipe. By default, right keeps and left sets aside, and a swipe never deletes anything.
- You want screenshots, screen recordings, and document-like images out of view. The Life view hides them without deleting them.
- You want reviewing and organizing done on your device, with no account to sign up for.
- Your videos take up too much space, and you’d rather compress them at Standard or Strong than delete them.
- You want a separate vault for private photos that won’t open while your screen is being recorded.

## Frequently asked questions {#faq}

### Can I use PicWay and Google Photos on the same iPhone? {#use-both}

Yes. PicWay works on the photos in your iPhone’s library, and Google Photos can back up that same library. Keep in mind that, according to Google, deleting a photo in the Google Photos app also deletes it from your device.

### Where does PicWay do its work? {#where-processed}

On your device. Browsing, analyzing, compressing, organizing, and deleting all happen there. The Private Vault, while its iCloud sync is on (the default), is encrypted on your phone and stored in your own iCloud.

### Do I need to sign up for PicWay? {#account}

No. PicWay itself has no account, so there’s nothing to sign up for. The Private Vault syncs to your own iCloud by default, encrypted first.

### Do Google Photos stacks save space? {#stacks-storage}

Google says grouping similar photos into stacks doesn’t change your available storage. In PicWay, you save space by deleting photos you don’t want, after you review them and iOS asks you to confirm, or by compressing videos and deleting the original once you’ve confirmed the new version.

### Does PicWay work on iPad? {#ipad}

Yes. PicWay works on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.0 or later.
